On March 16, 2007, Westcoast was informed that all $800,000 of funding for
Westcoast Provincial Services will be discontinued on April 30, 2007.
Without this Provincial funding, Westcoast’s capacity to serve the child care
community and families throughout BC is at risk. With these funds Westcoast
has provided the following services:
- Access to the Westcoast Library's unique collection of almost 20,000 items for more than
1,000 child care providers, families, ECE students, researchers and others.
- Workshops for at least 700 child care providers in BC communities including Safe
Spaces Bullying Prevention for Preschoolers training.
- More than 1,000 print resources and 3,800 consultations for child care providers
and organizations throughout BC.
- Mobile Lending of early childhood development books and toys for young children from 400
families in communities outside of Vancouver.
- Curriculum packages for 22 different workshops for family child care providers through Child
Care Resource and Referral programs throughout the province.
- Westcoast website with resources and links for at least 68,000 parents and child care
providers.
A future without Provincial funding means eliminating most of these services for
child care providers, families and others outside of the City of Vancouver. While
Westcoast is committed to providing quality services to all BC communities,
Westcoast will no longer be able to:
- Bring training that enhances quality of care for young children to communities outside Vancouver.
- Lend Westcoast Library books, videos and specialized play and learning kits that support quality
leaning experiences for young children outside of Vancouver.
- Provide early childhood development books and toys that promote school readiness of young children
from low income families outside Vancouver.
- Offer Safe Spaces Bullying Prevention training for child care providers and parents in communities
outside Vancouver.
- Provide up-to-date training materials for use by Child Care Resource and Referral Programs.
