Your Qualifications

  • All new hires to SSOCC must have full COVID 19 vaccination: (“WHO” approved vaccines against infection by SARS-COV-2, or a combination of approved WHO vaccines). Medical exemptions must be approved by PHO.
  • Legally able to work in Canada.
  • At least 1 year experience working in a similar support role. 
  • A Master's Degree in any of the following disciplines: 
    • Social Work from an accredited School of Social Work, including relevant practicum placement and current full registration with the British Columbia College of Social Workers
    • Counseling Psychology, including active registration with BCACC
    • Board Certified Behaviour Analyst, including active registration on the AFU RASP list 
    • Occupational Therapy and licensure with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC
    • Speech and Language Pathology and registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC
    • Special Education, and a current, valid BCTF or SNE teaching license
  • Experience in a childcare setting with certifications in DIRFloortime or Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) is an asset but not required.

Required Experience:

Your Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and understanding of family and child supports and interventions for learning disabilities, ASD, ADD/ADHD, trauma and anxiety, including group psychoeducation, classroom based supports, and interventions and family interventions. 
  • Demonstrated comprehensive psychotherapy skills including parent coaching, and child therapies.  Child therapy modalities may include, but are not limited to expressive therapies, behavioural therapies, and CBT.
  • Demonstrated mental health and child developmental assessment and case management skills. 
  • Understanding of the value of lived experience and family involvement. 
  • Demonstrated ability to educate and provide consultation to clients, families, teachers and healthcare professionals regarding possible therapies and interventions, universal and individual supports and strategies for the classroom, and community support available to the child and family.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, coordinate and deliver psychoeducation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of early child development (0 - 6) and School Aged Children (6-12).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pharmacological issues related to the identified population served by this program. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the developmental stages of an individual within the family life cycle and the related psychosocial issues as well as knowledge of the broad range of issues pertaining to child mental health.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social-emotional learning principles
  • Knowledge and experience providing Indigenous culturally competent and responsible care
  • Demonstrated ability to make effective referrals, reflecting in-depth knowledge of mental health resources and strong collaborative skills in working with education, mental health and social agency personnel. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and to understand the frameworks of other disciplines. 
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, develop and carry out assessment, evaluation, recommendations and staff/parent coaching on implementation of interventions and/or universal accommodations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, families, staff members, and community agency personnel. 
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload in a complex environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and have exceptional time management skills
  • Working knowledge of cloud-based administrative tools and software.
  • Demonstrated physical and mental ability to carry out the work, including lifting up to 40 pounds, if required. 

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

What you’ll do

The Inclusion Support Specialist provides leadership in delivering high quality, inclusive support for students, volunteers, and staff of the Steveston Society of Children’s Centres– Licensed Child Care programs.

 

In this role, you will work closely with our teaching staff, parents, and children to support inclusive education, and workspaces using your experience and adaptive skill sets to communicate, coordinate, and monitor plans for individuals at our centres and/or providing recommendations around adaptations/modifications for universal design. 

 

This role with require the capacity and experience to:

 

  • Conduct comprehensive psycho-social, child and family assessments by methods such as interviewing the child and family, obtaining relevant information, gathering social data regarding the child and family and formulation of assessment and plan of intervention, in accordance with professional practice standards and society policies. 
  • Collaborate with community-based professionals to ensure regular updates regarding home-based and agency-based interventions are reflected in the child’s individual care and education plan.
  • Support the individual within the classroom environment, using appropriate interventions addressing behavioural or physical concerns within the classroom. This may include providing education to families and educators, data collection within the classroom, providing referrals, identifying universal accommodations for the classroom, providing resources and advocating for funding and community-based support.
  • Provide an annual comprehensive individual care and education plan for identified children in need of support, focusing on the child’s social, emotional, cultural and physical needs within a classroom context.  
  • Facilitate Kindergarten transition planning with the teaching team, family, and community agencies by coordinating meetings and school district observations in the spring prior to Kindergarten.
  • Maintain a fluctuating caseload as required, which includes all children in the society requiring an individual care plan. 
  • Assist Centre Managers, Teachers, and Parents with preschool aged assessment tools such as the ASQ.
  • Complete Monthly observations of all children on the caseload are carried out and documented.
  • Educate families through psychoeducation on a variety of child development topics.
  • Maintains client records by methods such as charting client information, preparing observational notes in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements and documenting for future reference. 
  • Act as a resource to clients and their families by performing duties such as:
    • Providing information for clients and families regarding community mental health resources and access to these resources
    • Suggesting contacts to facilitate wrap-around planning
    • Arranging referrals and facilitating the development of mental health and child development resources to support the wellbeing of clients and families–including referrals and applications to PACE and local SCD for funding
    • Acting as the staff/program contact for all PACE and SCD contracts

Salary & Benefits:

 

Compensation 

The salary range for this position is CAD $42.27 - $52.81 / hour and is comparable to Grid 10 of the Health Science Professionals 2024 Wage Grid. This is a non-union position and you will be an employee of SSOCC. 

In addition, applicants holding a valid BC ECE certificate are eligible to be paid the BC ECE Wage Enhancement. The wage enhancement is in addition to the hourly wage, and is subject to all rules and requirements as per the BC ECE Registry.

Work Hours & Locations

This is a one year, part-time contract, with renewal subject to funding. 

This is a part-time, 2-3 day per week position (16 hours per week). The operating hours of the centres typically fall between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, with the exception of afternoon/evening hours for the Sandpiper and Heron Out of School Care Program which operate from 2:30 pm - 6:45 pm. Occasional hours in evenings or weekends to accommodate parent-education sessions as scheduled. 

Exact work times may be negotiated with SSOCC at time of hiring, and a stable and predictable work schedule is required. This position is required to work on-site during probation hours, however, a 70/30 On-Site/remote work balance is allowable after 3 months probation.
