One-on-One Early Learning / English Tutoring

Required Experience:

Experience working with preschool or young elementary-aged children is preferred. Experience in preschool, daycare, tutoring, children's programs, camps, or Early Childhood Education is an asset.

Experience or familiarity with early literacy, phonics, and beginner reading is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

This is a one-on-one educational tutoring position for a 3-year-old child in Coquitlam. Sessions are approximately 45–60 minutes, twice per week.

Key responsibilities include:

• Build confidence in English listening and speaking

• Encourage conversation and vocabulary development through natural interaction

• Use stories, games, pretend play, picture-based activities, and creative activities

• Teach letter recognition, letter sounds, and basic phonics

• Introduce sound blending and simple CVC words

• Incorporate simple drawing and creative activities

• Adjust activities based on the child's interests and progress

• Provide parents with brief, regular feedback

What a Session Might Look Like

We are not looking for worksheet-based tutoring. A typical session might include:

• A quick greeting/warm-up ritual
• 10–15 minutes of early literacy and listening games — letter and sound games, alphabet scavenger hunts, sound I-Spy, magnetic letters, or simple two-step “treasure hunt” instructions
• 20–30 minutes of play-based conversation — building together, reading a dinosaur book, pretend play with puppets, or drawing
• Your real job is to get her talk: open questions, three seconds of wait time, and gently recasting instead of correcting ("Oh, you saw a crab! What was it doing?").
• Describe what she's doing rather than praising it ("You lined up all the blue ones!" beats "Good job!") — she does her best when she doesn't feel evaluated.
• A short wrap-up where she tells you about a drawing, activity, or story from the session
• After each session, we would appreciate a very brief update — for example, a new word she used, her best sentence of the day, or something you noticed about her progress.

Salary & Benefits:

$40–$60 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Flexible part-time schedule.

Additional Notes:

We are looking for one consistent tutor who can develop a long-term relationship with our daughter. She is a curious, bilingual 3-year-old who speaks Mandarin at home and English at daycare and enjoys dinosaurs, nature, drawing, and figuring out how things work. Sessions should be warm, interactive, and play-based, with an emphasis on encouraging her to communicate naturally rather than putting pressure on her to perform.
