ONLINE Responsible Adult In Child Care Settings Course

Friday October 15 to Friday October 29, 2021     Time: 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm         

11 weekdays, 1.5 hour sessions each, plus 30 minutes self-study per session.

Before you register:

  1. Westcoast offers interactive, live workshops as opposed to webinars or lectures. In an online environment this requires a reliable internet connection, an updated device and enabling the camera and microphone for the duration of each session. These are basic requirements to attend our workshops/courses and to receive a certificate of participation, so please consider this before you register. 

  2. This course will take place via Zoom. A link for all sessions will be emailed to you a day before the course.

  3. Check your email settings and your spam folder.

  5. For faster access download zoom for free.

  6. It is strongly recommended to join from a computer, rather than a smartphone.

  7. Participants are responsible to have their equipment updated, in working condition, test their audio/video and all computer settings, as well as how to join to take part.

  8. Join each session by clicking the link 15 min. before start time. 

  9. Doors will close 15 minutes after start time. Anyone arriving late may not be admitted and will be marked absent.

  10. Sessions are never recorded. 

  11. If a session is missed there is no way to make it up, there will be no certificate of participation, no refund or credit, no transfer, or make-up class.  

  12. A certificate will be emailed to participants who attend all sessions, after completion. 

  13. Self reflection resources/materials and workbook, will be shared with participants by email. This will count for 5 additional hours of independent learning on your certificate for a total of 20 hours.

Description:

This course was developed by Westcoast CCRC to meet the requirements for 20 hours “Responsible Adult” training as stipulated by the Child Care Regulation. Through online sessions, it covers basic concepts about child development from birth to 12 years of age, child guidance, health, safety and nutrition and programming. 

Employment Possibilities:
Responsible Adults Are qualified to work in: 

  1. School Age Group Child Care (licensed).

  2. Occasional Child Care (licensed).

  3. As a replacement (substitute/casual on call) for an ECE Assistant (for less than 30 days) in a licensed group child care centre (a Responsible Adult may not replace a fully qualified early childhood educator).

  4. Before and after school care.

  5. Open a licensed family child care or registered license not required (RLNR) child care.*

  6. Summer camps.

*Westcoast recommends that participants who have taken Westcoast CCRC's 20-hour Responsible Adult course and want to open a family child care also take the 16-hour Administration for Family Child Care course (AFCC) to learn about family child care as a business.

Requirements:

According to BC’s Provincial Child Care Licensing Regulation, a Responsible Adult must:

  • be at least 19 years of age.

  • be able to provide care and mature guidance to children.

  • have completed at least 20 hours of training in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition and,

  • have relevant work experience.

Participants Must:

  • Carefully read all policies.

  • Be 19 years of age at the time of registration.

  • Have grade 8 English written and oral skills (or equivalent) to actively participate during class.

  • Attend all sessions in order to receive a certificate of completion. 

  • Enable the camera and microphone to participate in this course.

Please note:

  • It is strongly recommended that you join from a computer, rather than a smartphone.

  • The course workbook is copyrighted material and should not be copied or reproduced in any way.

  • Registrants have one-year online access to the workbook, which contains all of the course materials, as well as valuable tools and resources. 

  • This is a non-credit course (cannot be applied towards the completion of a degree).

Instructor: Vesna Krcmar. Vesna is an experienced facilitator and Early Childhood Educator, she has worked as a Vancouver CCRR Child Care Services Consultant at Westcoast Child Care Resource Centre and currently she is their Outreach Professional Development Coordinator. She brings a rich background in working with 0-5 year old children in both family child care and group care settings and as a Westcoast’s facilitator for the 35-hour Introduction to Family Child Care Course and the 20-hour Responsible Adult in Child Care Settings.

  1. Requests for cancellations must be received at least 3 business days prior to the workshop / course date to get a refund, minus any Administration Fees.
  2. All refunds are subject to a $10 Administration Fee, except for workshops / courses that are $100 or more, which have a $25 Administration Fee.
  3. No monies will be refunded or credits offered once the workshop / course starts, or if it’s missed.
  4. Westcoast may cancel a workshop / course at any time. Registrants will be notified and receive a full refund.
  5. If a class is missed registrants forfeit their fee and there will be no refund or credit.

  1. It is the participants’ responsibility to read the workshop/course description and objectives and make sure the training selected is suitable for their learning needs.
  2. Only Vancouver CCRR Registered LNRs or Vancouver Licensed Family Child Care Providers qualify to pay the FCC Fee and will need the Promo Code received by email to register. Use the promo code when registering, as no fee adjustments can be made after registration is confirmed. The Promo Code is not applicable for courses which are $100 or more.
  3. Participants must be 19 years of age at the time of registration.
  4. The equivalent of Grade 8 high-school English understanding, written and oral skills are necessary to actively participate in class.
  5. Participants must stay for the full workshop/course to receive a certificate.
  6. Doors close 15 minutes after start time in respect to the presenter and participants.
  7. We are unable to accommodate children during workshop/course time. Please make childcare arrangements.
  8. Payment must be made at the time of registration to confirm a seat.
  9. Receipts and handouts (if any) are always sent by email.
  10. There is a $15 charge to reprint a certificate or receipt for up to 1 year from the workshop / course date.
  11. Everyone in the class must abide by the Classroom Code of Conduct.
  12. These are non-credit workshops / courses, meaning they cannot be applied towards the completion of a university or college certificate, diploma or degree.

We are all guests in the training room. In an effort to maintain a safe and welcoming environment, we ask that we follow these guidelines:

  1. Respect people’s choices, experiences and feelings.
  2. One person speaks at a time.
  3. Participate actively by including your voice and make space for other voices to be heard.
  4. Respect confidentiality, what is said in the group, stays in the group. Speak in private with the instructor if necessary.
  5. Assume the best intent. This is a space to learn and sometimes that means making mistakes.
  6. Take care of yourself, whatever that may look like.
  7. Mute your microphone to reduce background noise and unmute it for group discussions, to comment or ask questions.

In keeping with our eco-conscious goal of reducing paper use, handouts, resources and certificates will be sent by email. In this way, participants will have a resource that can be saved and viewed across various devices, shared and printed anytime.

We may take some photographs (including a Zoom group picture) during workshops/courses with the purpose of promoting our training. By registering you consent to allow us or others attending to take your photograph. If it’s okay with the facilitator, you may photograph materials, slides, books, etc., but not film the workshop.

Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) require a minimum of 40 hours of professional development to renew a certificate to practice. Select topics you would like to expand on or that you’re passionate about.

Registered Family Child Care Providers (RLNR) are required to complete at least 4 hours of professional development before their annual renewal date.
