This workshop will introduce participants to the Family Support Institute, a non-profit organisation serving families living with disability. We will learn about the value of their Peer to Peer support network, common issues faced by families and other resources we can use in our work with families with diverse abilities. On day two participants will learn how to embrace person-centred thinking, planning and practice; as each person with diverse abilities is unique and has their own strengths, abilities, hopes and dreams. We will:

  • Explore the needs of families with children with diverse abilities.

  • Accept and value the differences of families, promote inclusion and support the confidence development of families with extra needs.

  • Understand resources available for families and educators in the special needs community.

  • Empower individuals to take the lead on envisioning possibilities for themselves.

  • Explore various tools that support a person-centred planning process.

Living Inquiries:

  • Well-being and belonging

  • Engagement with others, materials and the world

  • Identities, Social Responsibility and Diversity

Pathways:

  • Diversity and difference.

  • Safety and respect.

  • Every child is a gift.

  • Time for engagement.

  • Family origins, cultural background, place of origin, allegiance and affiliation, citizenship, and other identities.

  • Individual differences.

  • Social responsibility and justice.

Suitable for students, parents, intermediate and experienced early care and learning professionals working with children of all ages, from infants/toddlers to school age children, including children with extra support needs.
