Recognizing and responding appropriately to the diverse cultures, lifestyles and life experiences of those we work with every day is key to establishing the respectful adult relationships that are essential to our ability to provide quality care for children. In this workshop we will explore ways to reach better understandings with our colleagues about our common humanity within the many facets of diversity.

The Trouble With Time Outs
Date Saturday March 27, 2010 [please note new date]
Time: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
  Registration begins: February 9, 2010
Presenter Dr. Deborah MacNamara is an educator and counsellor in private practice with over 15 years experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. Her experience includes working with parents of young children to youth at risk and university students. She is currently on faculty at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
Cost $35
Time-outs – the kind that involves separation from parents and other caregivers - has become a popular practice for dealing with problem behaviour. The issue is not that it works when it does, but why it works and what it costs in the long term. Developmental science is unequivocal in its findings of relationship and emotion being the two most important factors in healthy development. Time-outs, in the way they are typically practiced, are injurious to both these factors, wounding children and provoking defensive instincts to back out of attachment and numb vulnerable feelings. Once assumed to be safe practice and still recommended as the discipline of choice by over 80% of today's paediatricians, we must now become conscious of the risks of such discipline. We will discuss the trouble with time-outs and strategies for disciplining in ways that are attachment-safe and developmentally friendly.

Time: 7:00 – 9:00 pm
  Registration begins: February 9, 2010

Cost $35
Today’s families are diverse. They come from a variety of cultures, speak a multitude of languages and represent a wide range of configurations. In recent years child care programs have become skilled at providing a welcoming environment for children from various language groups, cultures and ethnic origins. We need to become as equally aware of and comfortable with all configurations of families. We may find ourselves challenged to provide a truly welcoming environment for children of gay and lesbian families. This workshop will explore ways to ensure our programs welcome and include all children’s families.

All too often, children's physical development is left to small amounts of time outdoors or in a large gym. We stand, watch and help where we can; yet generally take quite a passive role. However, there is fascinating research available now to help us plan with purpose and interact with intention in the physical development domain. Join us to learn more about enhancing physicality in your program and helping parents understand more about ways that active play contribute to this critical area of children's development.
