Required Experience:

  • 2 year ECE diploma or provincially recognized equivalent

  • Current BC  Certificate of Practice, ECE or ECE IT or ECE IT SN

  • Current Standard First Aid and Level “C” CPR. N

  • Clear criminal records check

  • Current Immunizations

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children, parents, guardians, and community members

  • Willingness to work flexible hours

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning daily child care activities.

    • Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities

    • Establish and carry out a daily activity schedule that incorporates child directed activity, care routines and transition times

    • Develop activities promoting a thoughtful reflection of learner’s interest and encouraging opportunities for creative thinking, skill-building, playful experiences, and meaningful relationships.

    • Organize space, equipment and materials before activities

    • Plan open-ended experiences for the children to spark imagination, build self-esteem and encourage children to enrich their every day experiences using the environment as the third teacher

    • Assist children in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions or comments that extend conversations

    • Use a variety of teaching techniques including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing

    • Encourage and assist children to practice self help skills

    • Plan and carry out experiences that foster an understanding of a variety of cultures and value systems

    • Provide opportunity each day for each child to experience quiet time

    • Provide opportunity for child directed play experience

    • Guide children in self-motivated learning, helping stimulate their natural desire to learn

    • Plan and carry out activities that encourage problem solving; approaching conflicts as opportunities to learn 

    • Provide experiences and play materials that actively promote diversity and acceptance in interactions and attitudes

    • Participate in short and long term planning and evaluation and staff program reviews

    • Learn and use the activities and skills provided to assist children in developing the necessary coping skills for addressing unique life issues

 

  • Individualized observation and documentation of children's daily activities.

    • Observe how children use materials and interact with each other and adults

    • Use observations to expand play and plan activities that recognize individual difference

    • Initiate referrals or additional services for parents and children

    • Reduce barriers for children to allow inclusive programming

    • Follow individual care plans

 

  • Ensure guidance of children's behaviour that encourages positive self-concept.

    • Set reasonable behaviour expectations consistent with the center's philosophy and policies

    • Lead by example. Encourage children to respect themselves and others through guidance and role modeling 

    • Provide positive guidelines such as redirecting, positive language, and positive reinforcement

    • Immediately address problem behaviour without labelling the child

    • Follow behaviour guidance and policies established by the centre and consistent with accepted practice in the field

    • Maintain a knowledge and understanding of the services offered for referral to parents

 

  • Ensure the child's environment is healthy and safe.

    • Follow the centre’s procedures for administering medications and maintaining health records

    • Report all accidents, injuries, and illnesses to the manager or delegate and record such incidents in the daily log book and as a serious occurrence if necessary

    • Monitor the environment for hazards

    • Update self daily on children’s allergies and other special conditions

    • Establish daily eating routines that are positive and relaxing for children

    • Attend to children’s physical needs for toileting, diapering, eating and sleeping as promptly as possible

    • Report all incidents of child abuse to the supervisor and follow centre procedure and government regulations

    • Release children only to authorized persons

    • Ensure positive communication with parents

    • Plan for  and attend parent conferences as needed 

    • Discuss the programs daily events and the child’s daily progress with parents

    • Accommodate the parent’s instructions for daily routines when possible within group routines Encourage parents to participate whenever possible

Administration (10%)

  • Contribute to the ongoing operations of the centre.

    • Follow all licensing requirements and standards of care.

    • Carry out the responsibilities assigned to you.

    • Attend regular staff meetings

    • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to the centre’s children, their parents, and staff

    • Participate in the annual performance review process

    • Contribute to the annual plan for the centre’s strategic development, when required

    • Plan and carry out annual personal development pathways/opportunities

    • Keep up to date with early childhood advocacy developments

    • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality

  • Promote the centre within the community.

    • Actively participate in staff activities whenever possible.

    • Maintain a positive working relationship with other staff.

Salary & Benefits:

  • HOURS: Full-time at 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

  • STARTING WAGE: $20.00 to $22.00 per hour dependent on experience; 

  • $23.00/hr ECE ITE

  • $24.00/hr ECE ITE SN

This is an exciting opportunity to provide nurturing care for children, ages infancy to 5 years, at a Brand New, Purpose Built Childcare Centre​, with 7500 sq ft of indoor, natural light filled space, and a 3500 sq ft outdoor garden area.
